Scientific Research: Research provides the evidence for the challenging task of translating science into practice.

Harvard Researchers – there are many including Willet, Hu, Sacks, Stampfer, Colditz and Mozaffarian …. Of course the important studies that have made great contributions to our knowledge base: most notably The Nurses’ Health study .

The Nurse’s Health Study (1976 - )

The Nurses' Health Study: established in 1976 by Dr. Frank Speizer, and the continuation, Nurses' Health Study II, established in 1989 by Dr. Walter Willett. Nurses’ Health Study III is underway.

The Nurses’ Health Studies are among the largest and longest running investigations of factors that influence women’s health. The information provided by the 238,000 nurse-participants has led to many new insights on health and disease.

While the prevention of cancer is still a primary focus, the studies have produced landmark data on cardiovascular disease, diabetes and many other conditions. Most importantly, these studies have shown that diet, physical activity and other lifestyle factors can powerfully promote better health.

 

The Framingham Heart Study (1948 - )

The Framingham Heart Study, established in 1948, under the direction of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), has focussed on identifying the common factors or characteristics that contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD). CVD development has been followed in three generation of participants from Framingham, Massachusettes (USA).

This study has led to the identification of major CVD risk factors, as well as valuable information on the effects of these factors (e.g. blood pressure, blood triglyceride and cholesterol levels, age, gender, and psychosocial issues) on CVD. Risk factors for other physiological conditions such as dementia have been and continue to be investigated. In addition, the relationships between physical traits and genetic patterns are being studied.

 

The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI)

The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) (1993 - 2005; follow up study through 2010 )is a long-term American health study that has focused on strategies for preventing heart disease, breast and colorectal cancer and osteoporotic fractures in postmenopausal women (aged 50 – 79). These chronic diseases are the major causes of death, disability and frailty in older women of all races and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The WHI attempted to address many of the inequities in women's health research and provide practical information to women and their physicians about hormone therapy, dietary patterns and calcium/vitamin D supplements, and their effects on the prevention of heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis.

WHI,funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), involved 161,808 women aged 50-79, and is one of the most definitive, far reaching clinical trials of women's health ever undertaken in the US.

Patrick Holford (1958 - ) English, Founder Institute Optimum Nutrition, author of more than 30 books. His books have largely been written for the popular audience. Despite my own knowledge and going from doctor to doctor for help with health issues I was struggling with, it wasn’t until I stumbled across his books that I was able address my health concerns in a meaningful way. Information and guidance found in his books transformed my health and changed my life.

 

T. Colin Campbell PhD ( 1940 - ) American, at the forefront of nutrition research for more than 40 years. The China Project, is reputed to be the most comprehensive study of health and nutrition ever conducted. Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University. Authored more than 300 research papers and coauthor of the bestselling the book, The China Study: Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health. His principle scientific interests have been the effects of nutritional status on the causation of cancer and long term health and the relationship of diet, nutrition and chronic disease etiology.

His course on vegetarian nutrition inspired me to continue studying, and answered many open questions.

Linus Pauling (1901 - 1994 ) American, one of the most influential chemists in history and ranks among the most important scientists in any field of the 20th century. Pauling is notable for the diversity of his interests and made contributions to all: quantum mechanics, inorganic and organic chemistry, protein structure, molecular biology, and orthomolecular medicine.

Pauling is described as the father of molecular biology. His research in sickle cell anemia was the beginning of the field of molecular genetics. Pauling's work on the molecular basis of disease and its treatment is being carried on by a number of researchers, notably those at the Linus Pauling Institute.

Pauling has been described as one of the greatest thinkers and visionaries of the 2nd millennium, along with Galileo, Newton, and Einstein.

 

Plato (428 BC – 348 BC) Classical Greek philosopher, mathematician, writer of philosophical dialogues, and founder of the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. Along with his mentor, Socrates, and his student, Aristotle, Plato helped to lay the foundations of natural philosophy, science, and Western philosophy.

Jonas Salk (1914 – 1995) American medical researcher and virologist, best known for his discovery and development of the first safe and effective polio vaccine.

 

Nevin Scrimshaw (1918 - ) food scientist and Professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His revolutionary accomplishments over six decades in fighting protein, iodine, and iron deficiencies, developing nutritional supplements, educating generations of experts, and building support for continued advances in food quality have made substantial improvements in the lives of millions throughout the world.

He has published many, many articles, books and manuscripts, and co wrote (with Carl Taylor) the WHO monograph on interactions of nutrition and infectious diseases which has laid the foundation for much of current thinking in the complex field of nutrition and immunology.

 

Alfred (Al) Sommer (1942 - ) American ophthalmologist and epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dean of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health from 1990-2005. His research on vitamin A in the 1970s and 1980s showed that dosing severely vitamin A deficient children with an inexpensive, large dose vitamin A capsule twice a year reduced child mortality by as much as 34 percent. The World Bank and, recently, the Copenhagen Consensus list vitamin A supplementation as one of the most cost-effective health interventions in the world.

His long-term, continuing research involves the cause, magnitude, consequences, and control of vitamin A deficiency and, most recently, those of related micronutrients. In a series of intervention trials Sommer conducted in Indonesia (1976-1980), he and his research team discovered that vitamin A deficiency was far more common than previously recognized, and that even mild vitamin A deficiency dramatically increases childhood mortality rates, primarily because this deficiency reduces resistance to infectious diseases such as measles and diarrhea. In parallel studies, Sommer and colleagues demonstrated that most cases of measles-associated pediatric blindness were also related to low vitamin A levels.

The latest research by Dr. Sommer and his colleagues has shown that supplementing Nepalese women of childbearing age with vitamin A or beta-carotene can reduce maternal mortality by an average of 45 percent, and newborn vitamin A supplementation can reduce neonatal mortality by 20 percent.

NB there are no magic bullets in health and nutrition, no one nutrient or intervention that is sufficient for optimal health….but in the face of poverty, malnutrition, deficiency and maternal, infant and child mortality, Vitamin A supplementation comes to the fore, as does oral rehydration therapy (ORT very simple sugar, salt, electrolyte and zinc formulation) immunization and breastfeeding… simple low cost interventions with great impact, saving lives.

Vernon Young ( 1938 – 2004) Professor of Nutritional Biochemistry at MIT. Revolutionized scientific understanding of how the human body processes nutrients into protein. His main area of interest was how the body metabolizes amino acids obtained from eating protein and developed quantitative methods for determining how much of the 22 amino acids the body needs and thus, indirectly, how much protein people really need to eat according to their age, general health and other factors. He set the basis for improving health outcomes not only in developed nations, but in developing countries by changing the rule of what constitutes the necessary nutrition for growth. Our current conception of how much protein people need to consume is largely based on his research.

 

Carl Taylor (1916-2010) MD, DrPH, American, founder of the academic discipline of international health, founding chair of the Department of International Health at Johns Hopkins (Bloomberg School of Public Health). Instrumental in designing the global agenda for primary health care in the 1960s and 1970s. Before it was widely embraced, he was part of research and movements that connected women’s empowerment and holistic community-based change.

Lisa, principle consultant and founder of balance ur bod nutrition consultancy is a qualified nutrition therapist (dip.ION), a Nutrition Therapy Council registered practitioner, and a current member of the British Association of Applied Nutrition and Nutrition Therapy (BANT) and is bound by their codes of ethics and practice. She is fully insured, and dedicated to continuous study of current research and industry developments through Continued Professional Development (CPD).

In keeping with her quest for knowledge, Lisa is currently enrolled in yet another degree program, an MSc at the University of London (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine) which she hopes to complete someday.
